Stop saying “you’re not a nerd” as if being a nerd is something of which I should be ashamed.  In fact, I think that my nerdiness is one of the best things about me, and has led to some of the best friendships in my life.

Being a nerd does not mean that I am unattractive, less fun to hang out with, antisocial, or unfunny.  Being a nerd means that I know a lot about the things that have sparked my interest and passion.  Being a nerd means that I don’t hop around from interest to interest on a fleeting whim, but rather I spend time learning every intricacy about that thing I love.  Being a nerd means that I have a community of people just like me who love those things I love just as much (if not more) than I do.

So, next time you hear me say that I’m a nerd, please don’t say “you’re not a nerd, you’re so _________” (insert adjective there).  Instead, say “yeah, you’re a big nerd.  And I’m really nerdy about these things: ___________” (insert nouns there).

And what makes you a nerd, tumblr?
